Much of this interest has been concerned with general patterns and processes of change across the region. In contrast, this collection of essays, edited by Meusburger and J6ns, explores the particularities of Hungary's transformation process and thus provides considerable detail to both complement and challenge more generalized understandings of change. In the preface, Jbns and Meusburger indicate that the main aim of the edited volume is 'to contribute to a further understanding of Hungary's ongoing transformation processes and its current situation as one of the leading candidates for EU membership' (p. v). The book is generally successful in this aim, while at the same time raising a number of interesting points for further discussion and analysis. At first glance, the book has a number of intriguing characteristics. First, many of the contributions are written by Hungarian academics
