Abstract
Book ReviewsInfrared and Raman Spectroscopy of Polymers. H. W. Siesler and K. Holland-Moritz. Marcel Dekker, Inc., New York and Basel. 1980. $47.50 SAGE Publications, Inc.1981DOI: 10.1177/004051758105101212 This volume is very useful to those involved in the infrared and Raman spectroscopic studies of polymeric materials. Although the book is somewhat more research oriented, it is still very useful to students of ~ .. , polymer science because of the theoretical background it provides in these two areas along with the scope these techniques have in elucidating the structure of polymers. The first chaper deals with the scope of these two types of vibrational spectrgscopy to areas of polymer research. The second chapter deals with the theoretical aspects of ir and Raman absorptions and the use of group theory and symmetry operations to identify structural elements of the polymers that give rise to specific absorptions. The third chapter describes principal features of modern ir and Raman spectrometers and sampling techniques. Principles of Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy are discussed in detail. In addition to conventional sampling techniques, the method of attenuated total reHectance ir spectroscopy has been dealt with in , detail. Applications of ir and Raman spectroscopy in qualitative
