On this theme it was not the media alone that found excellent opportunities to alert, or even frighten, the public. It is, therefore, perhaps a pity that this report, drawn up by a most impressive expert committee in 1987, has only just appeared in print. For, in the troposphere, formaldehyde is truly ubiquitous, and not solrel from industrial sources. At high co centrations it is at once recognised as irritant. That apart, it looks as though the other supposed dire adverse effects can be discounted. In this booklet the evidence is neatly summarized and the conclusions are rationally presented.
