Since the research project was also to be used to improve communication, it was also in the nature of action research, the researcher's recommendations being later instituted in the organization. Due to the com- pany's recent rapid growth and the acquisition of a number of smaller plants, top management believed that improvement of communications within the company was necessary. For research purposes Moonman defines communication as meaning: "The passing of feelings and ideas by an individual or group to another individual or group, and, where necessary, the evoking of a discriminating response ..."
