Price £1/16/- stg SAGE Publications, Inc.1970DOI: 10.1177/002218567001200309 Ruth Johnston The University of Western Australia THE AIM of this research in a textile company was to study the extent and quality of communication between the staff at the company's headquarters, between various managers of the multiple branches scattered all over the country, and between supervisors, managers and workers in each of the plants and between plants. Since the research project was also to be used to improve communication, it was also in the nature of action research, the researcher's recommendations being later instituted in the organization. Due to the com- pany's recent rapid growth and the acquisition of a number of smaller plants, top management believed that improvement of communications within the company was necessary. For research purposes Moonman defines communication as meaning: "The passing of feelings and ideas by an individual or group to another individual or group, and, where necessary, the evoking of a discriminating response ..." (p. 11). This definition of communication is rather vague and imprecise. The author gives a short history
