Oxford: Pergamon Press SAGE Publications, Inc.1986DOI: 10.1177/002087288602900211 Naomi Golan University of Haifa, Israel This book contains the edited proceedings of the Second International Conference on Psychodynamic Social Work, held at the Smith College School for Social Work during the midsummer of 1982. The subjects discussed are familiar enough to social workers throughout the world so that it is possible to respond to these stimulating presentations with little'difficulty: The proceedings include nine papers delivered at the Conference. Louise Bandler of Simmons opened the Conference by giving an excellent perspective on the evolution of psychodynamic (or clinical, as it is now called) social work education in the United States, tracing developments from the early days of Jane Addams and Mary Richmond through the introduction of psychoanalytic influences into the curriculum in the years from the 1920s through the mid-1950s, then to the erosion of the 'psychodynamic consensus' in the period from 1955 to 1975, and on to the start of a new synthesis which is currently taking place. Her paper provides a useful introduction to this volume. Zofia Butrym of the London School of Economics
