Abstract
BOOK REVIEWS will undoubtedly gain more from the volume than the raw recruit. It does provide the useful function of bringing together a set of broadly related articles but may do little to increase the availability of some of the material. I feel that the important issues raised could have been better handled in a volume of specially authored and directed articles, which highlighted the debate for the intended audience. The presentation as it stands does little to carry the issues to a wiser public. It is regretable that the general introduc- tion is necessary as the intended presentation is often confused or different from the editors stated intent. This leads me to believe there are two books under the same cover: the first is the one that the editors claim to have conceived and the second the actual product. The editorial policy was based around the premiss that the Media, Culture and Society line of thinking was an alternative to both Althusserian Marxism and media effects schools. The final product does not bear testament to the uniqueness of approach that the editors claim. Much more could have been made of the value of such a different approach:
