BrianWest University of Ballarat As detailed by its author, the genesis of the book was a casual query at a depart- mental Christmas party. Professor Garry Marchant, then Head of the Department of Accounting at the University of Melbourne, asked the prospective author if he would be interested in writing a history of the department. The prospective author initially equivocated but then accepted the assignment, and for that we should be grateful. In documenting the history of the accounting discipline at Australia's sec- ond-oldest university, Geoff Burrows has written a book that also serves to make an important contribution to the history of the discipline more generally. One of the many challenges that confronted Burrows in writing this book - and one which he readily acknowledges (p.xiii) - is the centrality of The University of Melbourne to his own professional career. Burrows undertook undergraduate studies in accounting at Melbourne from 1959 to 1961, was a full-time staff mem- ber for 30 years from 1971, and served a four-year term as Head of Department. Subsequent to his retirement in 2001 he has maintained an ongoing association with the University as principal fellow. As the author recounts, this circumstance "isPreview Only.
