Others which may be of particular interest to readers of Urban Studies are those by Adams, Housing America in the 1980s; White, American Neighborhoods and Residential Differentiation; and Frey and Speare, Regional and Metropolitan Growth and Decline in the U.S. Long's contribution is an important, data- based, review not just of the 1980 census result (of course now quite dated) but of the whole field of migration and residential mobility. The 800 references and extensive footnote discus- sion of current and past literature turn the book into much more than a simple review and analysis of the 1980 census data. It reflects the long commitment by Larry Long to empirical data analysis and interpretation, while the addition of the extensive discussion of current conceptual issues enriches the monograph beyond a simple statistical compilation.
