Book reviews Extraordinary popular delusions and the madness of crowds & Confusion de confusiones Charles Mackay and Joseph de la Vega Martin S. Fridson, Editor New York: John Wiley & Sons, 1996 "Extraordinary popular delusions and the madness of crowds" (1841) & "Confusion de confusiones" (1688) by Charles Mackay and Joseph de la Vega respectively are now reprinted in this "Wiley Investment Classic", the fourth in the series. The three earlier books are reprints of classics from the first half of the 20th century. This particular reprint (referred to hereafter as EPD) delves back into the distant past of investment follies. EPD has a short foreword, and a 13-page introduction and guide by Martin Fridson of Merrill Lynch, which sets the scene for the past misadventures. Mackay's book recounts the saga of the Mississippi Scheme, the South-Sea Bubble, and Tulipomania. The second half of EPD contains a 22-page introduction by Hermann Kellenbenz (with a bibliography) published in a 1957 reprint, and finally the book by de la Vega, which describes in a series of dialogues, the origins and growth of the Amsterdam exchange, and the scheming and connivance which led to a market crash in 1688.
