Abstract

204 Book Reviews minority groups to traditional Mafia, La Cosa Nostra, and syndicate models of organized crime. This discussion, how- ever, overlooks the importance and pervasiveness of Colombian and Jamai- can gangs in the lucrative drug trade. Other topics involving minorities in crime and minority interactions with the criminal justice system include an exam- ination of the etiology of juvenile delinquency among minority groups, police violence, brutality, civil rights violations against minorities, and the heavy rate of imprisonment of minori- ties. In a futuristic look toward mea- sures that could ameliorate the overinvolvement of minorities in crime and the disproportionate victimization of minorities, the author examines problems of the underclass and of minority employment in criminal justice agencies. He proposes significant changes in legislation, education, em- ployment, and research, as well as a series of reforms in criminal justice, corrections, and social service efforts in order to make meaningful changes that would impact minority criminality and victimization. A key strength of this book is that it provides a great deal of insight into the proclivities of different minority groups to engage in different types of criminal behavior.
