10.1177/0022167802238810 OTHER Tom Greening Alan Nelson, 1947-2002 ALAN NELSON, 1947-2002 Alan Nelson,a member of JHP's board of editors, died peacefully on August 5, 2002 at Dominican Hospital in Santa Cruz, California, after a recent diagnosis of multiple myeloma. His wife and partner, Elaine Cashman, was at his side. Alan was born February 5, 1947 in Anacortes,Washington, and was lovingly adopted by Chet and Violet Nelson of Long Prairie, Minnesota. He received a Ph.D. in clinical psychology from Harvard University in 1976. He worked closely with Carl Rogers and later had a clinical practice in Santa Cruz for many years. Believing that every person can make a difference,Alan founded the Peace Project, a nonprofit organization that he directed from 1978 until his death. He was very instrumental in creating the Peace Psychology Division of the American Psychological Association, helped form Psychologists for Social Responsibility, held national leadership positions in both organizations, and was an adjunct professor at Saybrook Graduate School. His workwas published in the American Psychologist and the Journal of Peace Psychology, and he contributed an important article to JHP's special summer 1984 peace issue, "Prayer for Peace: Meditation, Contemplation, and Nonviolence in Our Nuclear Age."
