Jones Department of Engineering University of Aberdeen j.c.jones@eng.abdn.ac.u ADDENDUM BY REVIEWER I was delighted to receive for review this paper by Morrison and Ogle on tumble dryer safety and to observe that my own idea of applying the Semenov model of thermal ignition [1] had been drawn on and extended. Thanks are due to them also for their correction to the calculation of rotation speed. The original and this recent work concur in ruling out spontaneous heating of the payload of a tumble dryer as a possible hazard unless there is contamination by oil or grease. Almost certainly unknown to the Editor and the authors is that there was a particular timeliness to this submission having regard to the fact that it invokes Semenov's model of thermal ignition. About a week before I received it, I had participated in the International Conference Non-isothermal Phenomena and Processes in Yerevan, Armenia [2]. This was held in honour of the 75th birthday of the Russian combustion scientist Prof. A.G. Merzhanov, whose career was quite closely linked with that of Semenov. It was at the personal request of Semenov that Merzhanov joined the Institute
