A comparison with the requirements for good judgement, sound interpersonal skills and wise habits in the past and today are made. The findings are that much of ancient wisdom may still be relevant today in modern practice. Further, those making policy decisions about what should be judged to be appropriate as part of a programme of leadership should apply the principles and suggested practice from some past thinkers. They should not ignore the rules of life that pervade such texts and favour only the thinking of the last 20 minutes of history. Those in leadership positions need to be educated. To be educated includes knowledge of the past as well as experience of the present.
