Comment A response to Lou Goldberg's concerns about oral history Geoff H. Burrows University of Melbourne Introduction In his last publication before his death on 18 October 1997, Lou Goldberg's "Comment" in the May 1997 edition of this journal demonstrates several aspects of his enormous erudition (Goldberg, 1997). Appearing 62 years after his first recorded publication and 24 years after his official retirement, it emphasises his scholarly, as distinct from merely physical, longevity. How many current accounting academics will emulate Lou by, in effect, never retiring from active research? "Comment" is also a product of determination as well as enthusiasm: failing eyesight caused him great inconvenience in his later years. "Comment" reflects Lou's enduring pre-occupation with historical truth and accuracy and is stylistically typical of his more critical writings. Dictionary definitions, historical allusions, witty observations and mischievous asides are all combined in his elegant prose. His couplet in imitation of Pope - when Great Historians choose to disagree/How can we minnows set Truth free? - is superb. Finally, "Comment" shows Lou's mastery of irony: readers know that his "trivial points" and "slight doubts" are decidedly non-trivial and far from slight.
