More than fit for purpose: mental health buildings for the future

More than fit for purpose: mental health buildings for the future There are 132 major building developments underway in the NHS, making this the biggest ever building programme. However, this opportunity for new hospitals and inpatient facilities also brings with it increased responsibility to ensure there is a fitting legacy of appropriate buildings for the provision of health and social care for future generations. But what makes a good mental health hospital? The Royal College of Psychiatrists report, Not just Bricks and Mortar, identified that there can be no ‘off the shelf build’, and that the provision of good care is inevitably local and responsive to specific need ( Royal College of Psychiatrists 1998 ). Through effective regard to local need and community requirements appropriate facilities may be developed – simply knowing what is wrong with old facilities does not necessarily provide the answers for the future. There must be a careful balance of safety, privacy and dignity issues along with the therapeutic and socially inclusive needs of service users and the requirements of all staff groups. http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Mental Health Practice Royal College of Nursing (RCN)

Abstract

There are 132 major building developments underway in the NHS, making this the biggest ever building programme.
