Traditionally, all states and territories of Australia had a system for the recognition and registration of mental health nurses (known historically as psychiatric nurses). The state and territory licensing bodies held a separate register for nurses who had completed an accredited programme in psychiatric nursing. Employment as a registered psychiatric nurse (RPN) or registered mental health nurse (RMHN) was an entitlement only of nurses who had qualified and registered as such. The introduction of comprehensive nursing education has led to the abolition of separate registers in all parts of Australia with the exception of South Australia ( Clinton and Hazelton 2000 , Happell 1997 ).
