A history of Division 30 (Psychological Hypnosis).
AbstractThe development of the APA Division 30 (Psychological Hypnosis) is traced in this chapter, which shows how long a history the study of hypnosis has in psychology. The authors trace the organizational background of the division, emphasize the challenges it has faced, and look to the future and problems yet to be resolved by the field and the division. Whereas most new divisions emerged as the results of prominent leaders in the field who form an informal network, then a specialized organization, and finally apply for division status, the formation of Division 30 was spearheaded by a young psychologist, Adel M. Mahran, who later fell into conflict with the more established leaders of the field. An interesting aspect of this history is the difficulty faced in even defining the nature of the phenomenon that defines the division. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2009 APA, all rights reserved)
