Measuring masculine gender identity in females
Abstract
Attempted to validate a psychometric instrument intended to measure "masculine gender identity" in females. This construct label was applied provisionally to a hypothetical factor that accounts for that covariation in male sex-typed behaviors observable within the population of anatomical females. Items in the scale were selected for their ability to discriminate among females, not for their ability to discriminate between females and males. Evidence for the construct validity of the scale were the reliable differences found among the following 3 groups of females expected to possess varying degrees of masculine gender identity: heterosexuals (236 university and nursing students), nontranssexual homosexuals (50 Ss, mean age 25.3 yrs), and female-to-male transsexuals (44 Ss, mean age 26.7 yrs).
