Praying with Lior

Praying with Lior DVD REVIEW Reviewed by Jeremy Turk Professor of Developmental Psychiatry, Institute of Psychiatry, University of London and Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist, South London & Maudsley Foundation NHS Trust, UK Director: Ilana Trachtman Faith can be simple. That is the explicit motto of this film based on the experiences of a Jewish boy with learning disability attributable to his having Down’s syndrome. Lior lives with his family in Philadelphia, United States. The film charts his and his family’s experiences through the run-up to his Bar Mitzvah – the coming of age of Jewish young men at 13 years – and the aftermath. For me this was an intensely emotionally moving experience to watch. Not just because of my own Jewish roots nor the reality that I, too, had a Bar Mitzvah – I have probably come close to holding the world record for being the least observant Jew ever since then. The film’s bittersweet poignancy is given further depth by the tragic death of Lior’s biological mother from breast cancer early in his life, leaving him and his siblings to be brought up by his father, a Rabbi, as was his mother.
