In particular, on Gerhardt's reading, among Nietzsche's most honored virtues are truthfulness, honesty, responsibility, justice, and courageousness. Gerhardt clearly tackles Nietzsche's philosophy from a wide variety of perspectives. But to consider this volume as a collection of heterogeneous papers would be a mistake. On the contrary, it is rendered coherent by Gerhardt's peculiar approach to Nietzsche, an approach characterized by his focus on what we could call the "big questions" of Nietzsche's thought and on the problems that Nietzsche's philosophy still poses to contemporary readers. As already mentioned, Gerhardt does this with rare insight as well as with a profound knowledge of Nietzsche's philosophy. The result is a collection of different perspectives that, brought together in this volume, make clear Gerhardt's interpretation of Nietzsche and his profound conviction that Nietzsche's thought--with all its strengths and weaknesses, and more than a hundred years after its author's death--still represents a major challenge for contemporary philosophers.
