Abstract

A ITKEN * School of Mathematics, The University of Edinburgh, Mayfield Road, Edinburgh, EH9 3JZ It gives me great pleasure to introduce this set of papers written to celebrate the 70th birthday of Joseph Gastwirth. Some of these papers were presented at a workshop in the Department of Statistics of George Washington University where Joe has worked for over 35 years. Law, Probability and Risk is delighted to be able to publish seven papers (and short debates on two of the papers) associated with the celebrations. The topics of these papers illustrate well the breadth of interests of Joe. His interests in statistics and the law are mainly concerned with the civil law and he has many publications in this area, see, e.g. Gastwirth (1988a,b) and the paper at the end of this issue. Topics for this collection of papers include the interface of law and statistics, discrimination in employment, statistical evidence in clinical and legal decision making, the relationship among the terms identification, individualization and uniqueness, an alternative approach to standard linear regression for the examination of potential wage discrimination, racial profiling and, lastly, a review
