THEOLOGIES OF VIOLENCE: THE RECRUITMENT OF MUSLIM SOLDIERS BY THE CROWN OF ARAGON The world does not run on believings alone. But it hardly runs without them. FIVE HORSEMEN A handful of documents, scattered about the chancery registers of the Crown of Aragon archives, tells of a remarkable journey: some time around April 1285, five Muslim horsemen crossed from the kingdom of Granada into the realms of the Christian Crown of Aragon. Their arrival should have raised an alarm. Bands of Muslim cavalry — whom the Catalans called jenets — crossed this frontier in times of both war and peace, wreaking havoc. Their incursions were violent and swift. Raiders would arrive suddenly, driving panicked villagers into town walls, ransacking homes, taking captives for ransom, and burning fields.
