The Hope of Liberation in World Religions

The Hope of Liberation in World Religions Book Reviews The Hope of Liberation in World Religions. Edited by Miguel A. De La Torre. Waco: Baylor University Press, 2008. vii þ 342 pp. $34.95 paper. This collection of essays is a richly textured inquiry into the hope of liberation for the disenfranchised and marginalized, for those aban- doned and exploited by our present “neoliberal” global economic system. Neoliberalism, argues Miguel De La Torre, the editor of this collection, is more than a decentralized, global economic order extended through an electronically connected network of markets, financial institutions, multinational corporations, and the mass media. It is also “a spirit,” or even “a faith,” and the major competitor of the world’s religious traditions today “for the souls of humanity.” The real struggle, then, says De La Torre, is not between this or that religious tradition, but rather between “the world’s disenfranchised and the materialistic religiosity of the world’s elite” (6). The book, then, is an exploration of the various faith traditions of the world in terms of how they provide resources and hope for resisting this neoliberal faith and, in particu- lar, how they “equip the marginalized within their midst to seek their own liberation” (6).
