THE DEVELOPMENT OF LASER CODES OF PRACTICE AND MAXIMUM PERMISSIBLE EXPOSURE LEVELS
Abstract
Abstract During the short period which has elapsed since lasers were first demonstrated, there has been a rapid succession of codes of practice and of standards aimed at controlling exposure to laser radiation. The levels of exposure permitted have also fallen dramatically in contrast to what generally happens with newly-introduced hazards. Current maximum exposure levels and the inter-relationship of the more recent codes and standards are discussed. The most important feature of these codes is the classification of lasers according to the degree of hazard they present. The underlying principles are explained. © British Occupational Hygiene Society
