Notes to Contributors

Notes to Contributors Music & Letters is a refereed journal that welcomes scholarly contributions of any length on any issue concerning the study of music. The subjects covered in recent articles range from an- cient Greek music to Pierre Boulez, and from archival and source studies to performance ana- lysis and critical theory; these articles have been from five to fifty-five printed pages in length. Shorter reports on new documents and similar findings can be considered for inclusion in ‘In Brief’, while further intellectual debate is fostered by specially commissioned review- articles. Intending contributors should provide an electronic copy of their article (in Word or Rich Text Format), plus two paper copies, printed without indication of authorship. Text should be formatted with double spacing and generous margins; indented quotations should also be double spaced, as should footnotes. Music examples, tables, and diagrams should be placed on separate sheets and identified by captions. Captions should also be written out in full on a separate sheet. Plates should be supplied as glossy positive photographs. Permission to repro- duce copyright material, which must be worded so as specifically to cover print and online publi- cation in perpetuity, must be cleared and if necessary paid for by the author; this includes applica- tions and payments to licensing agencies where appropriate. Evidence in writing that such per- missions have been secured from the rights-holder must be made available to the editors. It is also the author’s responsibility to include acknowledgements as stipulated by the particular institutions. Use underlining to indicate italic, and single, rather than double, inverted commas for short quotations (longer quotations are indented without inverted commas). Foot- note references should give the name of the author in the form in which it appears in the work cited (including first names, not just initials, where appropriate) and the full title of the work (in italic for books; in single inverted commas for articles and essays); surname and short title are used for subsequent references (not ‘op. cit.’ or such formulations, except for ‘ibid.’). In the case of books, give the place of publication but not the publisher; in the case of journals, give volume numbers in arabic numerals, with inclusive page numbers at the first citation. For general matters of style and spelling, please consult The Oxford Style Manual, ed. and compiled by R. M. Ritter, or New Hart’s Rules. For more detailed matters of house style, contri- butors may request a style sheet from the Editorial Office. While the Editors will try to be sympathetic to complex manuscripts, we reserve the right not to consider for publication material that is poorly presented or which is unsuited to our format. The Editors will make their decision on all submissions as quickly as possible; however, con- tributors should note that the refereeing process can take some time. Submitted manuscripts will not be returned to authors save in exceptional circumstances. We try to be helpful in indi- cating reasons for our decision on publication, but this is not always possible. Whatever the case, any such decision must be regarded as final. We welcome informal approaches concerning possible submissions to Music & Letters, and indeed comments on the journal itself. All submissions should be addressed to The Editors, ‘Music & Letters’, Department of Music, King’s College, Strand, London, WC2R 2LS. Copyright. It is a condition of publication in the journal that authors assign an exclusive li- cence to Oxford University Press. This ensures that requests from third parties to reproduce articles are handled efficiently and consistently and will also allow the article to be as widely disseminated as possible. As part of the licence agreement, authors may use their own material in other publications provided that the journal is acknowledged as the original place of publi- cation, and Oxford University Press as the publisher. http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Music and Letters Oxford University Press
