The estimated lifetime risk of CRC is 5–6%, and the incidence rate increases sharply after the age of 50. About 75% of new cases occur in individuals at average risk (1,2). The goal of achieving effective prevention of cancer is motivated by the prediction that CRC will become the leading cause of death, surpassing heart disease, by the end of this decade. Despite continuing advances in diagnosis and therapy, long-term survival has not improved significantly over the last four decades, and nearly 50% of CRC patients will eventually die of their disease (1,2), with an estimated number of more than 1,000,000 new cases in the year 2002 and >500,000 deaths. These statistics reflect the fact that most cancers are still refractory to most treatment modalities in at least 50% of the cases. Survival is directly related to the extent of
