Well-done and interesting studies of voting behavior in newly-fledged democracies are greatly needed. This is not only so in order to understand and appropriately interpret what is going on in those new democracies, but also because a great deal of our knowledge and existing literature on voting behavior is mainly based on the analysis of some Western European democracies, North America, or, at best, on comparative studies of a set of Western Democracies. The study of voters in new democracies might reveal new or more conclusive evidence of existing findings and hypotheses, setting the scene for major theoretical debates in the field. Unstable, changing electoral and political settings or uninformed and unanchored voters, so frequently present among these newly-fledged democracies, might offer a perfect arena for testing some of the most disputed hypotheses in the field, such as the formation of party identification and its role in predicting voting behavior, the formation and effect of
