Book Review Losing in Louisiana: The Legal Problems of Gambling and Edwin Edwards Bad Bet on the Bayou Tyler Bridges Farrar Straus and Giroux 2001 â That was a bumper sticker seen on cars across Louisiana a few years ago, when the gubanatorial election came down to a race between a former wizard of the Ku Kux Klan who seemed to have it in for anyone other than pure-bred Aryans, and an indicted former governor who seemed to feel that an honest politician was one who stayed bought. But yes, it was true. Voting for Edwin Edwards was important, if for no other reason than to beat David Duke, a truly incredible candidate, and thereby avoid one of the most racist and reactionary maelstroms the United States has ever seen. The bumper sticker was funny, but also very sad, with a sense of resigned poignancy. Thatâs probably the best way to describe Bad Bet on the Bayou by Tyler Bridges. Funnyâitâs incredible how outrageous the crooks described in this book wereâbut also very sad, because this stuff was actually going on. Tyler Bridges, the author, is
