$This text will be an excellent source of information for the physical therapist involved in orthopaedic and sports rehabilitation. It also will give other health-care professionals a comprehensive overview of the types of interventions provided by physical therapists. The book was written by a number of noted experts in the field, and the principles of rehabilitation that are presented are well accepted. The four sections of the text follow a logical progression: basic sciences, evaluation, regional considerations, and special areas. The section on basic sciences provides a well organized, clear presentation of topics such as neurobiology, biomechanics, inflammation response, fracture stabilization and healing, and ligamentous injuries. The section on evaluation covers manual therapy, musculoskeletal disorders, and strength assessment and provides a foundation for subsequent chapters. There is an historical account of the development of manual therapy and a brief overview of traditional and non-traditional manual techniques. The presentation is objective, and techniques that lack scientific substantiation are clearly identified. The section on regional considerations includes discussions of the anatomy, biomechanics, examination procedures, and interventions for each major region. There also is a chapter on industrial physical therapy. Several chapters include tables that list guidelines for intervention for common injuries. Most clinicians will find these tables very useful. Some chapters provide a detailed examination form with complete instructions. A few chapters in this section will need to be supplemented with other sources if the text is to be used for entry-level physical-therapy courses. Some examination procedures and interventions are not covered in enough detail for entry-level students, but the authors identify these areas and provide the reader with references. Nevertheless, these chapters accomplish their stated purpose of providing a thorough overview of the regions. Case studies are presented to reinforce the information provided in each chapter. The editors are to be commended for having compiled this comprehensive text. It is consistent in style and readability, and some of the shortcomings that can arise in a text with multiple contributors have been avoided. This book will be a useful addition to the personal library of any health-care professional involved in orthopaedic and sports rehabilitation. It also will serve as an excellent text for an entry-level physical-therapy curriculum, with the limitation noted previously. The text is well written and is supplemented by 462 illustrations. Questions for review are provided at the end of each chapter. In addition, each chapter contains an abundant number of citations and an extensive list of references and suggested readings.
