Atlas of Surgical Exposures of the Upper and Lower Extremities.

Atlas of Surgical Exposures of the Upper and Lower Extremities. Raoul Tubiana, Alain C. Masquelet, and Christopher J. McCullough, editors. With illustrations by Léon Dorn. London: Martin Dunitz; 2000. 388 pages. $199.95. Although portions of this book were originally published in 1990 as An Atlas of Surgical Exposures of the Upper Extremity and in 1993 as An Atlas of Surgical Exposures of the Lower Extremity, the current volume combines the best of both, with a European approach that is delightfully refreshing. The book consists of seventeen chapters and an excellent index that is well cross-referenced. The text covers surface anatomy, positioning of the patient, and indications for as well as illustrations of the various surgical exposures. Major underlying anatomic structures as well as those adjacent to the dissection are illustrated in color. The illustrations are accurate and well done, with the background surface anatomy retaining a black-and-white configuration that highlights the important and salient information. Correlative computed tomography scans and magnetic resonance images are used to demonstrate the radiographic anatomy as well. A notable highlight of the book is the well-illustrated and detailed description of the brachial plexus as well as approaches to the peripheral nerves.
