Abstract

TIME-DEPENDENCY OF THE VARIATIONS DURING FORCED INFLATIONS OF THE RESPIRATORY PRESSURE-VOLUME CURVE IN THE DOG ( l ) BY K. P. van de WOESTIJNE and D. TROP (Deparlment of Internal Medicine, University Clinics " S t . Rafael ", Lonrmin) ( 2 figures) Following a period of quiet ventilation, forced inflations cause a modification of the pattern of the pulmonary prcssurevolume curve (BERNSTEIN, RADFORL), 1957; 1957). The pulmonary compliance increases (MEAD and COLLIER,1959) : for a n equal pressure variation, the lungs can be inflated with a greater volume of air. (1957), This phenomenon, called (( adaptation D by BERNSTEIN was explained by this author by a recruitment during the forced inflations of alveoli which had closed during the previous period of ventilation. Direct evidence for air space closure was adduced by MEAD and COLLIER (1959), who showed t h a t following quiet ventilation the lungs develop some degree of atelectasis. The latter is reversible : the collapsed areas can be reinflated readily. MEAD and COLLIER(1959) stated t h a t the decrease in
