Serum Free Fatty Acids and Liver Glycogen in Rats Without Olfactory Bulbs

Abstract

Archives Internationales de Physiologie et de Biochirnie, 1973, 81, 639-645 639 R g u le 3 avril 1973. SERUM FREE FATTY ACIDS AND LIVER GLYCOGEN IN RATS WlTHOUT OLFACTORY BULBS BY Norma I. PERASSI and I. LOYBER (Instituto de Fisiologia {{Prof.Dr. Oscar Oriam, Facultad de Ciencas Mkdicas, Universidad Nacional de Cdrdoba, Santa Rosa, Cdrdoba, Argentina) Our studies regarding the role of olfactory bulbs in the rat have led us to class these among the extrahypothalamic nervous structures et et regulating ACTH release (LECUONAal., 1972; LOYBER al., 1973). At the same time, we have observed, in rats deprived of olfactory bulbs, changes in the insulin sensitivity, liver glycogen content and et glucose tolerance (PERASSI al., 1972). Bearing this in mind, as well as the role played by adrenal glands, ACTH and other hypothalamic factors in the mobilization of fatty acids, we have considered it of interest to study the serum concentration of free fatty acids (FFA) in rats deprived of olfactory bulbs. MATERIAL AND METHODS Rats of both sexes taken from stock bred in our Institute and weighing from 180 to 250 g, were used in this study. They were all kept under the same conditions and divided into
