Abstract
Outdoor leadership: theory and practice The authors of this text Bruce Martin, Christine Cashel, Mark Wagstaff and Mary Breunig are all involved in the delivery of undergraduate outdoor leadership programmes in the USA and are from four different institutions. All are current outdoor practitioners and give much to outdoor practice beyond their undergraduate work. Outdoor leadership: theory and practice is primarily an undergraduate textbook. It is intended to serve as a primary textbook in an introductory course in outdoor leadership (p. ix). It is a fully collaborative approach to outdoor leadership. The authors have selected a core competencies (CC) approach to outdoor leadership and have as the conceptual basis of this book identified eight core competencies. The competencies identified are: CC1—Foundational knowledge; CC2—Self-awareness and professional conduct; CC3—Decision making and judgement; CC4—Teaching and facilitation; CC5—Environmental stewardship; CC6—Programme management; CC7—Safety and risk management; CC8—Technical ability. These core competencies are seen as fundamental to outdoor leadership and therefore underpin the text which is organized in four parts; Foundations of outdoor leadership, Outdoor leadership theory, Teaching and facilitation, and Resource and programme management.
