Abstract
However, it is questionable whether these occurrences, constructed and edited for the purpose of entertainment, constitute real life … [R]ace, class, gender, and power issues, it is through these issues that images of the cast members are constructed. (Orbe & Hopson, 2002 , p. 225) Thank you to the editor and contributors for this valuable examination of the processes of mediation which foreground complex social relations. Looking back to MTV's first (1992) episode of The Real World , we learned how the mediation of race, gender, and class can become problematic within an entertainment genre that promises “to bring the real life experiences of a diverse group of people into the homes of millions” (Orbe & Hopson, 2002 , p. 219). Critical explorations are necessary to understand the myriad ways these promises and images continue to matter. As Kellner ( 2003 ) posited, society is like a grand narrative. Arguably, you and I create its characters; and our inquiries into the worlds of reality television (RTV) may contribute to overall societal transformation. A distinctly powerful medium, television provides sustained exposure to a constant set of images that help shape our perceptions of the world (Jackson, 2006 ). ThePreview Only.
