Abstract
One For The Girls! The Pleasures and Practices of Reading Women's Porn Clarissa Smith, 2007, Intellect Books, Bristol and Chicago, 263 pp, (hbk), ISBN 978-1-84150-164-2 This is a rare kind of book. It is a study of women's relationship to pornography that does not seek to measure harmful effects on vulnerable individuals nor the political or moral impact of pornography on society or women in general. Instead, it is a case study designed to explore the conditions of emergence in 1992 of a UK magazine, For Women , and its precarious attempts to remain financially viable over the next 15 years until it folded in 2006. What makes this study a significant contribution to our understanding of the relationship between women and pornography is its combination of an account of the magazine's changing content with an analysis of the correspondence elicited from a small number of committed readers over several years after they had responded to an advert placed in the magazine. This fresh approach is presented as an alternative to the established traditions in the field of “porn studies” which Clarissa Smith takes to task for being prone to assertion and generalisation.
