I was told by a faculty member in the Department of Chemistry that he had recommended me to STADLER fill a vacancy to as a technical assistant. After a brief interview, I was offered and accepted the job. later became his gradI uate student. STADLER in mid-career when I joined his group. was His principal goal in research was to identify the material basis of the gene. T o this end he devoted himself to the study of mutations, those induced by X-rays and ultraviolet light and those which arose spontaneously. I was hired to help develop filters that would screen out successive bands of ultraviolet light for the ultimate purpose of seeing which bands induced gene mutations, so that a profile of frequency of mutations as a function of wavelength could be obtained. Many substances of biological significance had known absorption spectra and it was his hope that the genic material could be identified by finding the relationship between mutations and the wavelengths that http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Genetics Genetics Society of America
