We depend on cryptographic methods to hide information from unauthorized parties, authenticate data provenance, regulate access to sensitive operations, identify subjects, verify integrity, and protect against counterfeiting – to name only a few uses. Simple encoding and steganographic methods have been known for thousands of years and likely were invented not long after writing itself.
