Research highlights ► Central 5-HT injections evoke a sequence of hypophagic, hyperdipsic and sleep-like responses in pigeons that resemble the postprandial behavioral sequence (PBS). ► These treatments induce complex patterns of Fos activity in tryptophan hydroxylase-immunoreactive neurons in various brainstem nuclei, which correlated with sleep and drinking behaviors. ► PBS may involve the inhibition of a tonic activity of serotonergic neurons on drinking and sleeping circuits relevant to the control of postprandial behaviors in amniotes.
