South-East Perth: An Archaeological Landscape . Pp. x, 180, with numerous maps and illustrations.... The Scottish Historical Review, Volume LXXV, 2: No. 200: October 1996, 246-266 Reviews In 1990 the RCAHMS published a survey of archaeological survival and settlement sequence in Glen Shee and Strathardle, that is, north-east Perthshire, where field work and especially air photography had revealed a wealth of information concerning human activity over several millennia, much of it new. This exciting investigation has been followed up by an even more detailed and profusely illustrated survey covering the southeast of the ancient county from the Carse of Gowrie to the Loch of Lowes, east and north of the Tay. The area chosen includes some of the most famous Roman, Dark Age and medieval sites in Scotland: Inchtuthil, Scone, Dunsinnan (now saved from quarrying), Meigle, Dunkeld and Coupar Angus. This ambitiously comprehensive survey will prove an invaluable tool for archaeologists, students of landscape evolution and historians of human settlement. The most spectacular additions to our knowledge arise, as with the sister volume, from aerial photography.
