When Professor Alfred Newton published his Dictionary of Birds in 1896 he wrote in his Preface: "It has been my object throughout to compress into the smallest compass the information intended to be conveyed". Here, Peter Täte outlines the history of ornithology, in almost two hundred pages, eleven short chapters and a select bibliography, from the Egyptian fowling scene of 3,800 years ago to the as yet incomplete volumes of Birds of the Western Palaearctic. The precis is reasonably successful as a companion to modern field guides, and P. TÄTE. Mr Täte follows in the footsteps of "The first popularisers" of his Chapter 9. The book might well find a place on the public bookstalls which are a feature of some modern museums and libraries, where in any case the original documents, all too often unresearched, are in safe custody. Where information is compressed into the smallest compass omissions are inevitable.
