WHITEHEAD Zoology Department, British Museum (Natural History), London SW7 5BD some additions China in October 1986, the late Richard Freeman asked me to look out for any additions to his list of Darwin works or Darwiniana translated into Chinese. In his second edition of The works of Charles Darwin (Freeman, 1977) he had located only eight titles (all concerning On the origin of species). With the help of Mr Chou Pangli (of Shanghai) and later his widow he was subsequently able to document sixteen Darwin or Darwinian works in Chinese in fifty-five editions or printings (Freeman, 1986—sixty-one items, six being already Hearing of my intended visit to catalogued). Since I was pressed for time in Beijing (Peking) and since Shanghai was presumably scoured by Mr Chou, I sampled only the library of Nanjing (Nanking) University, using the 1985 printing General catalogue of books in natural science in China (edited and published by Liaoning University Library); this includes all books published in China to the end of 1984.
