Books, British Museum, Mary Delany (17001788) was a friend and companion of Margaret Cavendish, Duchess of Portland, whose collection of natural history objects and drawings was the finest in the British Isles before it was dispersed in the famous auction in 1786. Mrs Delany was a regular guest at Bulstrode, the Duchess's home, especially after the death of her second husband, Dr Patrick Delany. It was probably while at Bulstrode that Mary Delany conceived her Flora Delanica, a collection of nearly one thousand paper collages depicting native British plants and garden flowers. These "paper mosaicks", now housed in the British Museum, earned her the praise of Joseph Banks, as well as inclusion in Erasmus Darwin's Loves of the plants So now Delany forms her mimic bowers Her paper foliage and her silken flowers.
