This book is a fitting memorial, for ccentrated this difficult genus almost to the exclusi of all others during the botanically most productive part of his life. His work w respsible for changes in the treatment of the genus, but since his death further taxomic revisi h inevitably obscured his individual ctributi. This paper is an attempt to evaluate the importance of his studies of Potamoget. The individual taxa described by are discussed by Prest (1988). Obituaries of (Evans & Britten, 1912; Druce, 1913) give detailed biographical informati.1 He w born in Chatteris in the Cambridgeshire Fenland Christm Day 1826, into an old and prosperous Fenland family. He w educated at Leicester where the future explorer of the Amaz, H. W. Bates, w a schoolfriend.
