This architectural revival was to be a replica of the original Elizabethan site, likewise located on the south bank of the Thames — allowing contemporary Shakespeare lovers to soak up his verses among architectural surroundings just like those the Bard would have known. The freight of historical accuracy, mingled with a desire to reap financial profits from the new Globe, turned the project into both theater and theme park: a stage for actual performances and a museum — complete with Shakespeare-themed exhibits and guided tours — purporting to narrow the gap between the “real” historical figure and his modern-day fans.
