American Literature the late-seventeenth-century political contexts that led to the emergence of the captivity narrative genre, including events such as the Restoration, challenges to the Massachusetts charter, and King William’s War, which marked the shifting place of New England in the English imperial project, Toulouse uncovers deep ambivalences, contradictions, and tensions between elder and younger generations of Puritan male colonists and between Puritan male colonists and English officials. Captivity narratives from Rowlandson through Williams, Toulouse writes, “at once express and give shape to certain New Englishmen’s responses to historical and political transformations in fatherly authority” (19). Her argument pushes us all to read these narratives and the colonial mindsets they document beyond the reductive binary of “Puritans versus Indians” and instead to see New England within the context of a dynamic transatlantic imperial conversation, one shaped and inflected by constructs of gender. Karen Weyler’s Intricate Relations likewise enriches our understanding of the multiple social and economic contexts shaping one of the literary successors to the captivity narrative: the early American novel.
