Wolfgang Bunzel (Hg.), Sten Nadolny. But there seems little prospect of common ground when one side can refer contemptuously to "die selbstgefällige Sturheit der Altavantgardisten" (p. 71) and the other claim that their opponents embody "die Spezies des bundesdeutschen Kleinbürgers" (p. 148). One recalls the comment once made, in another context, by one of Günter Grass's characters concerning the German proclivity for going "von einem Extrem ins andere",1 a characteristic which some of the personal attacks launched in particular upon Grass himself here ("als Künstler seit langem überfordert" [p. 137]) seem only to confirm.
