TOWARD A SYNTAX OF TEMPORAL REPRESENTATIONS

TOWARD A SYNTAX OF TEMPORAL REPRESENTATIONS Probus 3.2: 187-213 TOWARD A SYNTAX OF TEMPORAL REPRESENTATIONS ALESSANDRA GIORGI and FABIO PIANESI Istituto per la Ricerca Scientifica e Tecnologica, Trento 0. INTRODUCTION* In this paper we will propose and discuss a hypothesis concerning the relationship between the semantics of tense and the syntax of verbs, by formulating a set of constraints governing the mapping between syntax and semantics in the domain of temporal relations. We will adopt a revised version of Reichenbach's (1947) hypothesis on tense representation and the results of recent theories on verb syntax and head movement (see among others: Chomsky 1989, Pollock 1989, Belletti 1990, and Roberts 1991). Our discussion will focus on the principles which permit the mapping between the two. To this end, we analyze two closely related languages, Italian and (classical) Latin, which, in spite of their similarities, show some striking differences in the verbal System and verbal morphology. The aim of this work is twofold: (a) we will show that the revised Reichenbachian model and the syntactic Implementation we propose for it are descriptively adequate with respect to the Italian and Latin Systems, and (b) we will demonstrate that the principles of UG we hypothesize, together with specific properties http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Probus - International Journal of Latin and Romance Linguistics de Gruyter
