The Federal Centre for Document Conservation at the National Library of Russia investigated the influence of the photocopying process itself as well as of the toner on photocopy paper. The investigation was carried out in cooperation with the Codicological and Scientific Document Examination Laboratory of the Manuscript Department at the National Library of Russia. The photocopy papers were assessed before and after accelerated ageing under moist conditions and UV light exposure using standard procedures. The paper macrostructure was additionally investigated by means of a digital imaging technique borrowed from document and codicological research. The technique involves a digital camera that is sensitive in the visible and near infrared range of the electromagnetic spectrum, a flatbed scanner and a printer capable of processing video signals and equipped with suitable software to operate the system and to store visual and textual information. The mechanical and chemical standard tests of the paper demonstrated that the photocopying process does not have any negative effects to the paper. However, the photocopy toner caused considerable changes in the paper texture.
