Studies on thc Genus Caulerpa from Karachi

Studies on thc Genus Caulerpa from Karachi Introduction Karachi is shuated on the northern part of the Arabian Sea and has long been neglectedfromthe algal point of view. It is very surprising that evenduring theBritish period in India no scientific attempt was ever made to exploit the marine algal flora of this region. But still we find scattered accounts of this region which we owe to BOERGESEN, a Danish Phycologist, who is considered äs the pioneer in the field of marine algae from this area. He was of the opinion that Karachi presents a rieh algal flora and the study of this region would be of great interest to the Phycologists. His contributions were based on the collections at Kew Herbarium. Specimens from Karachi to this Herbarium were contributed by J. A. MURREY, Miss L. FRERE, N. M. PAUL and ViceAdmiral W. J. PULLEN. In addition to this BOERGESEN also recieved collections from K. G. NAIK and Dr. M. A. HOWE (collections of A. B. KOTWAL). BOERGESEN'S synoptical systematic list of marine algae (1934) contains a few species only but ANAND (1940) made a good contnbution towards the taxonomic and ecological study of the marine algae from the Karachi coast.
