New York and London: Garland, 1992. xiii + 344pp. $82. 1. Introduction Northern Porno is one of the seven mutually unintelligible Pomoan languages spoken around the town of Ukiah, Mendocino County, California. The Pomoan family is often assigned to the Hokan stock, although the genetic relations to other families assigned to Hokan are at best distant. Most previous extended studies of Pomoan languages have concentrated on phonology (including morphophonemics) and morphology; thus McLendon (1975) devotes 29 pages to the phonology and morphophonemics of Eastern Porno, 139 pages to morphology, and only six pages to syntax. Pomoan verbal derivational morphology in particular is exceptionally rich and must be described in any comprehensive grammar of the language, but this bias has had the effect of keeping equally fascinating syntactic aspects of Pomoan languages effectively hidden. O'Connor's study of Northern Porno grammar, her 1987 dissertation from the University of California at Berkeley, redresses this balance by considering a number of syntactic features of the language, both providing detailed descriptions with carefully argued analyses and pointing to instances where Northern Porno data are relevant to current http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Linguistics - An Interdisciplinary Journal of the Language Sciences de Gruyter
